Tips of MVR Technology in High-salt Wastewater Treatment

In wastewater treatment industry, mechanical vapor recompression evaporation technology (MVR for short) aims to reduce environmental impact and reduce energy consumption by recycling and reuse of secondary steam generated by evaporators. The working principle of MVR in this application is that secondary steam from evaporators is compressed to increase its temperature and pressure. The pressed steam then enters the heating chamber and functions as the heating steam. After the material absorbs the heat, the generated secondary heat will be recycled and reused again as heat source for further evaporation cycle. Thus it reduces consumption of steam in the complete evaporation system and fresh steam is only required for starting up the evaporators.

At present, MVR evaporator is widely used in various fields, including evaporation and concentration of fruit juice, corn syrup, pharmaceuticals and other processes. Myande has successfully applied MVR to achieve zero-affluent result in treating non-organic wastewater with high concentration of salt as well as organic waste water.

In recent years, development of biochemical technology and successful separation, cultivation and treatment of halotolerant and halophilic bacteria have made it possible to treat industrial wastewater containing salt by biochemical methods. However, halotolerant and halophilic bacteria have high requirements for the ambient conditions and can deal with wastewater with limited salt content. The running cost is also high. MVR evaporation technology on the other hand can not only reduce COD figure in wastewater with high salt content but also separate the soluble salts from the industrial wastewater so that the water can be recycled.

Technical advantages of MVR evaporator:
1) Energy saving. MVR does not emit waste heat and spent steam and thus has significant energy saving benefit.
2) Environmental protection. MVR needs minimized or no live steam and doesn’t require boiler.
3) Stable operation. MVR typically have high degree of automation.
4) MVR requires less public facilities and takes smaller area.
5) Simple structure, low operating cost, mild evaporation.
MVR Evaporation Technology

Applications:
1) Seawater desalination
At present, the main methods of seawater desalination are reverse osmosis and distillation. The distillation method mainly includes multi-stage flash, low-temperature multi-effect distillation and pressure steam distillation technology. According to various comparative studies MVR heat pump circulating system is the most energy-saving solution for seawater desalination system.
2) Salt production.
In China, multiple-effect evaporation facilities are widely used in salt production process while in Europe MVR salt producing method is more widely applied. The MVR salt making technology can effectively reduce energy consumption in this era with increasing cost of energy.
3) Wastewater treatment.
In chemical, chemical fertilizer, pesticide, textile and some other industries, waste water usually contains a large number of non-organic salts, such as sodium chloride and sodium sulfate, etc. If the high-salt wastewater is discharged directly without treatment, it will not only pollute environment but also cause the soil salinization. At present, wastewater treatment methods include physical and chemical filtration, MVR evaporation and concentration, multiple-effect evaporation, membrane purification and so on. Compared with other methods, MVR evaporation and concentration has obvious advantages in terms of lower energy consumption and reduced running cost.
